4-Day Mt Kenya Trekking Sirimon Route down Chogoria

Mt Kenya in Africa second highest mountain than Mt Kilimanjaro beats it altitude Mount Kenya is unarguably the more enjoyable mountain to climb, with stunning views glacial features and varied flora and fauna There are half a dozen alternative routes on the mountain, each joining at the trekkers peak at Point Lenana (4985m). The Sirimon – Chogoria route is the most popular ascent with fantastic glacial scenery and a nice steady rate of ascent Chogoria is the favoured descent more beautifully.

Day by Day Tour Itinerary

Day 1 – Nairobi -Old Moses Camp

Nairobi – Sirimon gate- Old Moses camp. ( 3,300m) 4-5 hrs, 9km walk, 680m ascent.
After breakfast pick up in Nairobi at 6:30am start driving through central reach kikuyu land via karatina town the biggest East Africa open market to Nanyuki town crossing the equator en route to the Sirimon Park gate for lunch (2650m). From the gate, we trek up thro magnificent montane forest, bamboo and giant heather zone before reaching the high altitude moorland and our first hut (Old Moses camp 3,300m) for dinner and overnight. This is a gentle trek that takes 4-5hrs gaining an elevation of 680m.

Day 2 – Old Moses -Shiptons Camp

Old Moses – Shipton camp (4200m)6-7 hrs 14km 900m ascent

After breakfast leave the camp around 7:00am follow the track uphill forking right at the junction After a water break you continue on the track crossing Onitili River before turning right contouring through the Moorland and crossing Liki North River and continue uphill to Mackinders Valley from where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the Shipton Camp. This camp is a surreal setting below the towering peaks and glacier. Resident population is of Rock hyrax and species of birds lunch served en route dinner and overnight at shiptons camp 4200m.

Day 3 – Shiptons/Peak Lenana/Bandas

Shipton Pt Lenana (4985m)- Mt Kenya Bandas (2950m) 11-12 hrs 29km 785 ascent 2085m descent
Wake around 2:30am for tea and biscuite at 3.00am start to attempt point Lenana
The climb starts on frozen scree and continues on a rocky track with some very minor scrambling With a good Moon you barely need a torch Without a Moon i then the pollutions free sky with shinning star bangs on the ground giving you as good a view of the stars as almost anywhere on Earth.
The climb takes 3 hrs for the sunrise photo Mt. Kilimanjaro is also visible from the horizon with clear cloud
Descend to Minto’s hut for full breakfast After a short rest descend further to Mt Kenya bandas along the gorges valley where you can enjoy good views of The Temple Lake Michaelson Mushroom rocks and Giant billiards table Dinner and overnight at the Bandas. You can enjoy log fires, hot showers and bed at the Bandas lodge.

Day 4 – Bandas/Chogoria/Nairobi

After breakfast You descend from Meru Mt. Kenya Bandas at 2950m about 2-hour hike through the tropical rain forest you may encounter buffalo, klipspringer, zebra and sometimes elephant. You catch your vehicles will be waiting you to drive you through a dense Rain forest via Chogoria town where you will be biding the crews farewell and proceeding to driving to Nairobi arriving in the evening.
